Description

3.0 ALTOGRADO - Grappa Riserva / Mazzetti d'Altavilla / Piedmont

Spirits from Italy

The art of distillation has been known in Italy since the 11th century and was later spread by the Jesuits. Grappa is distilled from the fermented pomace left over from winemaking, known as "trester." This sustainable method allows not only the production of wine from grapes but also a wonderful spirit. For a long time, grappa was considered a drink for poor farmers. However, with technical improvements in the distillation process during the 20th century, this perception changed drastically. Today, grappa is one of the most esteemed spirits worldwide and is highly appreciated by gourmets.

In the picturesque village of Altavilla Monferrato, nestled between the Piedmontese cities of Asti and Alessandria, lies the historic distillery Mazzetti d'Altavilla. Founded in 1846 by Filippo Mazzetti, this distillery has been operated by the founding family for over 170 years without interruption. The distillery is renowned for producing exquisite grappa, brandy, and liqueurs, using pomace mainly from Piedmontese wines as the excellent foundation for their premium products. Today, Mazzetti d'Altavilla offers more than 100 different varieties of grappa, capturing the unique aromas and flavors of the region's diverse grape varieties. The distillery's commitment to quality and tradition has earned it numerous international awards, making Mazzetti d'Altavilla an essential destination for spirit enthusiasts and a remarkable representative of Piedmont's rich winemaking heritage.

Energetic, determined, and at the same time pleasing to both the nose and palate – this is how the 3.0 Altogrado presents itself. It is powerful in structure, yet balanced and harmonious, thanks to a very long aging process that gives it credibility and maturity as well as a charming personality. The maturity and determination of the 3.0 are personified by Silvia, the seventh-generation representative who best embodies the decisive character of this high-proof distillate (51.4% ABV). Her energy is complemented by remarkable elegance.

Unique among the distillates of Mazzetti d'Altavilla in its higher alcohol content, the 3.0 Altogrado stands for the triumph of grappa as a product that, thanks to its high alcohol content, excellently conveys the complex aromatic essence derived from Mother Nature herself.

The 3.0 Altogrado - Grappa Riserva from Mazzetti d'Altavilla is a true delicacy, distilled from carefully selected, fresh, and moist pomace of the finest Piedmontese grapes. Using a discontinuous process, where copper stills are indirectly heated by steam, this high-quality grappa is created. After distillation, the spirit rests for three months in stainless steel tanks, before aging for a further twelve months in chestnut and oak barrels. This meticulous aging process imparts the 3.0 Altogrado with unparalleled depth and complexity. Its rich and multi-layered aroma fascinates both connoisseurs and newcomers, elevating this grappa to a true masterpiece of distillation.

To fully enjoy its aromatic spectrum, it is recommended to serve the Grappa Invecchiata in a high-quality grappa glass, which perfectly highlights its fine nuances. On the nose, this grappa unfolds with a harmonious and elegant bouquet, characterized by seductive aromas of spices and tobacco. This olfactory symphony promises an equally refined experience on the palate. From the first sip, the outstanding balance of this generous grappa is revealed. An extraordinary taste experience is created by the perfect notes of dried fruits, sweet vanilla, and rich nuts. The high alcohol content integrates seamlessly into the overall picture, elegantly enhancing the complex aromas.

At an optimal drinking temperature of about 20 to 22 degrees Celsius, the 3.0 Altogrado from Mazzetti d’Altavilla is an excellent digestif after a rich meal, supporting digestion. It is best enjoyed neat and at room temperature to fully bring out its intense aromas. This aged grappa also pairs wonderfully with aged cheeses such as pecorino, Parmigiano-Reggiano, or Gorgonzola. The robust flavours of the cheese harmonize perfectly with the complex notes of the grappa, creating a harmonious taste experience. The Altogrado also complements dark chocolate or high-quality pralines exceptionally well, with the grappa highlighting the rich cocoa notes and creating a luxurious taste sensation that brings true delight. Roasted nuts such as almonds, walnuts, or hazelnuts are also excellent companions, as their nutty flavours enhance the warm, woody note of the grappa and offer a delicious combination. Dried fruits like figs, dates, or apricots provide a lovely contrast to this intense grappa. Their natural sweetness complements the robust aromas of the spirit, rounding off the tasting experience. For cigar enthusiasts, a high-proof grappa riserva is an ideal companion. The complex aromas of the grappa harmonize perfectly with the smoky notes of the cigar, offering a deep, rich tasting experience that lingers in memory.
