Description

Nero d'Avola Conchiglia DOC 2021 / Cantina Trovati / Sicily

Red wine from Italy

Outside of Trentino, Mezzacorona owns the Trovati winery in Sicily. The wines produced here are sometimes labelled under the brand names Feudo Arancio or Stemmari, depending on the country in which they are sold. The Trovati winery has a total of seven hundred hectares of vineyards in southern Sicily, on wineries in Sambuca di Sicilia in the province of Agrigento and in Acate in the province of Ragusa. Autochthonous and international grape varieties are grown here, which are cultivated and controlled with the experience and knowledge of agronomists. Here tradition meets modern technology, because the winery has modern winery equipment and was able to win over the oenologist Calogero Statella, whose skill and many years of experience create wines with great personality and high quality. The rest is done by the sun and the wind, which give the grapes their taste.

The red grape variety Nero d’Avola is a high-quality autochthonous grape variety of Sicilian origin, which is now widespread throughout southern Italy. Due to its excellent properties, it is also called "Principe Siciliano" (Sicilian prince). The city of Avola is located between Syracuse and Noto in the southeast of the island and can probably be assumed as the namesake of this grape variety. This vine is one of the traditional Sicilian grape varieties and is also known under the name "Calabrese", which may indicate the origin of the grape in Calabria. The Nero d‘Avola is rarely offered as a pure wine - if it does, as in our case, it is usually deep dark and concentrated without lacking the necessary acidity - but often in a blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

Depending on the degree of ripeness of the grapes, the hand picking begins in the middle of September. In the wine cellar, the grapes are destemmed, gently pressed, and fermented in stainless steel tanks. This Nero d’Avola will be expanded in cement cisterns until it is bottled.

The Nero d’Avola is a unique red wine that stands out from other wines due to its liveliness and fruity taste. With its ruby red colour, the bouquet is reminiscent of ripe fruits with an outstanding note of currant. The taste of Nero d’Avola from Trovati is fruity, dry, velvety, and soft.

At an optimal drinking temperature of around 16 to 18°C, this fruity red wine goes very well with strong risotto dishes, pasta al forno, almost all meat dishes in general and lamb in particular and with spicy cheeses.
