Description

“Serai” PERSEO Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon IGT 2020 / Le Morette / Veneto

Red wine from Italy

Nestled amid the gentle hills of Peschiera del Garda, between the azure waters of Lake Garda and the picturesque Frassino Lake, rises the familial gem of Le Morette. Since its establishment in 1960, this idyllic vineyard has found its home in the heart of Lugana DOC. Despite now being under the stewardship of the third generation, its deep-rooted philosophy remains unchanged: to uphold a profound respect for the environment and implement sustainability principles both in the vineyard and in the winery. Derived from the graceful teal that graces the shores of Frassino Lake, the vineyard's name adds an extra touch of charm to this idyllic locale, making it a true gem of Lake Garda.

Due to the Mediterranean climate that prevails on Lake Garda, the Merlot grape finds a perfect habitat here. That is why it is also one of the most commonly cultivated grape varieties in this famous wine-growing region. Le Morette's "Perseo" gets its complexity and good balance from the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Its cultivation on Lake Garda requires a lot of effort and care, but the result is unsurpassed.

The "Perseo" Veneto IGT is the result of an idea that has matured over time with the aim of obtaining a wine of great depth that, when drunk, recalls the outstanding moments that marked its production. The grapes are harvested by hand in the first half of October and set aside in small wooden crates to dry. So here the so-called “Appassimento” technique is used to concentrate the aromas of the grapes. Nicely dried, the fruit is then gently pressed and the fermentation of the must, which lasts sixteen to eighteen days, takes place at a controlled temperature of exactly 26°C. The two grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are vinified separately. This exceptional red wine is aged for 18 to 24 months partly in French oak barrels and partly in Slavonian oak barrels. It then gets its finishing touch by being stored in its own bottle for six months.

After allowing the wine to breathe for at least an hour, when poured into a wine glass, the brilliance of the ruby red color immediately catches the eye. And only a little later the nose is delighted by a fruity bouquet. Surrounded by notes of spices, which suggest a connection to the vines and the roasted aromas of the oak barrels, a subtle scent of currants, blueberries and tobacco unfolds. On the palate, Le Morette's "Perseo" Veneto IGT is dry, warm, and complex. However, it retains its good structure. Harmonious and velvety, its tannins are easy to recognize and prepare you for a phenomenally long finish that conjures up fine notes of cocoa and cedar in the mouth.

At a serving temperature of approximately 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, this exquisite red wine from the picturesque Garda Lake region unfurls its full potential, becoming a true delight. It reveals its nuances best when paired with delectable pasta dishes enveloped in robust sauces or emerging fresh from the oven. Equally, it complements beautifully dishes featuring tender red meats, tempting game, and matured cheeses. Yet, even for moments of quiet contemplation, the "Perseo" Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Veneto IGT proves to be a masterful choice, inviting one to savour it in its pure form and delve into meditative realms.

Grape varieties

MERLOT

The Merlot grape springs forth from the sun-drenched slopes of southwestern France, particularly the Bordeaux region, proudly standing among the most prominent red grape varieties worldwide. Its enchanting name likely derives from the French word "merle," alluding to the blackbird's fondness for its sweet, dark berries. Throughout the 20th century, the fame of Merlot spread beyond the borders of France, while in the picturesque Veneto, winemakers began to lovingly cultivate it in their own fields, refining the nuances of this noble wine. Veneto beckons with its mild climate, characterized by warm summers and gentle winters, thus creating the perfect conditions for the flourishing cultivation of Merlot. The Merlot vine captivates with its medium-sized, heart-shaped leaves, often with lightly serrated edges. Grapes hang in abundant clusters, large and airy, with a gentle oval shape. Their berries are surrounded by a thin yet resilient skin, shielding them against diseases. Compared to other varieties, Merlot grapes ripen early and often achieve a uniform ripeness, making them a preferred choice for winemakers striving for consistency and quality. When Merlot thrives in Veneto, the unique terroir of the region imparts an unmistakable character, shaped by its specific climatic conditions and soil characteristics. Thanks to the masterful craftsmanship of the winemakers, Merlot wines from this region can lead to unforgettable tasting experiences, whether enjoyed on their own or in harmonious blends, such as with Cabernet Sauvignon.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

The origins of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety stretch back to the 17th century, when it emerged in the prestigious wine-growing region of Bordeaux in France. While its exact origin remains somewhat elusive, it is generally believed to be the result of a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, possibly arising from spontaneous pollination. Over time, Cabernet Sauvignon has evolved into one of the most renowned and globally widespread grape varieties. The introduction of Cabernet Sauvignon into the vineyards of the Veneto region likely occurred in the late 20th century, as local winemakers began diversifying their vineyards with international varieties to meet market demands and produce new styles of quality wines. The leaves of Cabernet Sauvignon are medium-sized, dark green, and possess a leathery texture, often featuring five lobes with serrated edges. The grapes are small and cylindrical, growing densely along the vine branches and often forming loose clusters with small berries. The berries themselves are also small, oval-shaped, and assume a deep, dark blue to nearly black colour when fully ripe. The thick and robust skin contributes to its potential for aging and winemaking. The Cabernet Sauvignon vine is vigorous and often grows rapidly, tending to root deeply in the soil, endowing it with good drought tolerance. This now globally distributed grape variety typically ripens relatively late and generally requires a warm, sunny climate to achieve its full ripening potential. Nowadays, Cabernet Sauvignon can be found alongside traditional indigenous varieties in the vineyards of the Veneto. Winemakers have recognized the potential of this grape variety to produce wines with impressive structure, complexity, and aging potential, satisfying the discerning palates of wine enthusiasts worldwide.
