“Serai” Rosso Veronese IGT 2021 / Le Morette / Veneto

Container of 6 bottles

Red wine from Italy

The Le Morette winery, founded in the 1960s, is based on southern Lake Garda, on a thin strip of land that leads to Lake Frassino. It is currently run by Valerio Zenato in the second generation.

The soil composition in the area of southern Lake Garda, which is characterized by increased clay and salinity, was created by glacial movements during the Ice Age. This also created a microclimate that is particularly suitable for the cultivation of vines. Lake Garda enjoys a mild and favourable climate thanks to the surrounding, protective mountains and also experiences greater temperature fluctuations. This greatly benefits the aromas of the wine.

The name "Serai" is derived from the Veronese dialect and means something like small, enclosure for small animals in the garden. With the naming, the Le Morette winery wants to express a sign of the connection to the country and the people.

The "Serai" Rosso Veronese IGT is made from the best red grape varieties from the Le Morette winery. The red grape variety Merlot probably comes from France. It is an early maturing variety that produces fruity, full-bodied, and full-bodied wines. Up to the present, the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety has hardly been able to establish itself in Italy. This is surprising, because in its youth the wine from the Cabernet Sauvignon vine is fruity, rough and tannic with a strong "nose". Accordingly, actually a perfect basis for a blend. Characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon are the grape smell of black currants (cassis), which is partly accompanied by a smell of cedar wood, and the deep dark colour of the wines. In addition, the wines always have a concentrated fruit flavour with a supporting structure of tannins and acids. Finally, Corvina is a red grape variety native to the Verona valley. It can also be found in the present almost exclusively in this area.

The grapes for this Veronese red wine are carefully harvested by hand in the first half of September. This is followed by a gentle pressing of the grapes and fermentation with skin contact with daily tumbling. Part of the wine then matures in stainless steel tanks and part in tonneau barrels for four to six months. Finally, the Serai Rosso IGT matures in its bottle for at least two to three months.

The "Serai" Rosso Veronese IGT is a special cuvée wine made from selected red wine grapes, which reflects a great harmony between aromatic intensity and pleasant taste. Appearing in ruby red with violet reflections, this wonderful wine exudes an elegant and fruity scent of cherries, plums, and red berries. The taste is dry, fresh, and fruity. Overall, it is velvety and well structured. Its finish is harmonious and long-lasting.

At an optimal drinking temperature of around 15 to 16°C, the “Serai” Rosso Veronese IGT from Le Morette goes well with hearty appetizers, pasta and risotto dishes and dishes based on red meat. At the end of every meal, this northern Italian wine is an excellent accompaniment to medium-ripened cheeses.

Grape variety

MERLOT

The Merlot grape springs forth from the sun-drenched slopes of southwestern France, particularly the Bordeaux region, proudly standing among the most prominent red grape varieties worldwide. Its enchanting name likely derives from the French word "merle," alluding to the blackbird's fondness for its sweet, dark berries. Throughout the 20th century, the fame of Merlot spread beyond the borders of France, while in the picturesque Veneto, winemakers began to lovingly cultivate it in their own fields, refining the nuances of this noble wine. Veneto beckons with its mild climate, characterized by warm summers and gentle winters, thus creating the perfect conditions for the flourishing cultivation of Merlot. The Merlot vine captivates with its medium-sized, heart-shaped leaves, often with lightly serrated edges. Grapes hang in abundant clusters, large and airy, with a gentle oval shape. Their berries are surrounded by a thin yet resilient skin, shielding them against diseases. Compared to other varieties, Merlot grapes ripen early and often achieve a uniform ripeness, making them a preferred choice for winemakers striving for consistency and quality. When Merlot thrives in Veneto, the unique terroir of the region imparts an unmistakable character, shaped by its specific climatic conditions and soil characteristics. Thanks to the masterful craftsmanship of the winemakers, Merlot wines from this region can lead to unforgettable tasting experiences, whether enjoyed on their own or in harmonious blends, such as with Cabernet Sauvignon.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

The origins of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety stretch back to the 17th century, when it emerged in the prestigious wine-growing region of Bordeaux in France. While its exact origin remains somewhat elusive, it is generally believed to be the result of a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, possibly arising from spontaneous pollination. Over time, Cabernet Sauvignon has evolved into one of the most renowned and globally widespread grape varieties. The introduction of Cabernet Sauvignon into the vineyards of the Veneto region likely occurred in the late 20th century, as local winemakers began diversifying their vineyards with international varieties to meet market demands and produce new styles of quality wines. The leaves of Cabernet Sauvignon are medium-sized, dark green, and possess a leathery texture, often featuring five lobes with serrated edges. The grapes are small and cylindrical, growing densely along the vine branches and often forming loose clusters with small berries. The berries themselves are also small, oval-shaped, and assume a deep, dark blue to nearly black colour when fully ripe. The thick and robust skin contributes to its potential for aging and winemaking. The Cabernet Sauvignon vine is vigorous and often grows rapidly, tending to root deeply in the soil, endowing it with good drought tolerance. This now globally distributed grape variety typically ripens relatively late and generally requires a warm, sunny climate to achieve its full ripening potential. Nowadays, Cabernet Sauvignon can be found alongside traditional indigenous varieties in the vineyards of the Veneto. Winemakers have recognized the potential of this grape variety to produce wines with impressive structure, complexity, and aging potential, satisfying the discerning palates of wine enthusiasts worldwide.

CORVINA

The Corvina is a red grape variety that is mainly grown in the Veneto region of northern Italy. The exact origin of the Corvina vine is not clearly known, but it is believed to be an indigenous grape variety that has been cultivated in this area for centuries. The leaves of the Corvina vine are medium to large, rounded, and dark green in colour. The tendrils are long and flexible, which allows the vine to develop and grow well. Its clusters are generally medium-sized and grow into a loose and conical structure. The berries are medium-sized and have a thick, blue-black skin. The Corvina vine has a late ripening period, meaning the grapes are not harvested until late in the fall. This helps the berries reach optimal ripeness and concentration of aromas. The Corvina has adapted to the specific climate, soil and growing conditions of the Veneto region. Combined with other local grape varieties such as Rondinella and Molinara, it is often blended in different proportions to create complex and balanced wines.
