Description

"Tyrol" Weißburgunder Riserva DOC 2021 / Cantina Merano / South-Tirol

White wine from Italy

In 2010, the two traditional winery cooperatives of the Burggrafenamt, the Burggräfler Winery and the Cantina Merano, merged. This resulted in the Cantina Merano Burggräfler, which now has 380 members and cultivates 260 hectares of vineyards. As a result, the western growing area of South Tyrol from Lana in the south via Meran to Rifiano in the north and Algund to Kastelbell in the west has been united under one roof. Quality in the vineyard, quality at work and quality in the wine glass have top priority. The origin and provenance of the grapes must always be recognizable in the wine glass. The wine should remain true to its "roots“, because it's all about transparency, character and authenticity. So, every bottle becomes a special experience.

The Pinot Blanc grape feels particularly at home on the barren soil and sunny slopes in the Merano area and in Vinschgau. It has been cultivated extremely successfully in South Tyrol for over 150 years and has become the leading white variety in recent years. A true all-rounder.

No wine can describe its homeland of South Tyrol more aptly than the Weißburgunder "Tyrol" from the Cantina Merano Burggräfler in Marlengo. This noble drop comes from a single, very old vineyard with a naturally limited yield below the "cradle of Tyrol" - the famous Castle Tyrol. This up to 50% steep, very dry and nutrient-poor south-west slope is bordered on the sides by dense forest and is therefore protected from strong storms. At the same time, the fall winds of the Texel Group cause the temperatures to drop sharply at night.

After the manual grape harvest, the fruits are first fermented in stainless steel tanks, oak barrels and barriques. A partial malolactic fermentation then takes place, followed by eight months of aging on the fine lees. The result is a sparkling and light straw-yellow white wine that offers the nose a fine fruit of apple, pear, honey, and fresh nuts. Dry on the palate, the first thing that strikes you is its perfectly integrated wood note, which is ensnared by a juicy and fresh acidity. The long finale of the "Tyrol" Weissburgunder Südtirol leaves a lasting impression.

It is advisable to serve the "Tyrol" from the Cantina Merano, which is aged in wood, slightly warmer than your typical Pinot Blanc. The ideal temperature ranges between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius, allowing the wine's complex aromas to unfold gracefully. To fully unlock its diverse bouquet, it is recommended to let it breathe for approximately 30 minutes before serving. The Weissburgunder Riserva pairs exceptionally well with grilled fish or chicken seasoned with herbs. It also complements risotto enriched with mushroom or truffle aromas, as well as smoked or lightly spiced cheeses and creamy pasta dishes. This refined and rare wine is perfect for leisurely evenings and more festive occasions, serving as an excellent aperitif or accompaniment to main courses. The "Tyrol" Weissburgunder Riserva DOC presents itself in perfection, adding a distinctive touch of South Tyrol to any special gathering.

Grape variety

PINOT BLANC (WEISSBURGUNDER)

Pinot Blanc or Weissburgunder is a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir and has its roots in Burgundy, France. The grape variety is believed to have emerged through natural mutations over time. From the Middle Ages onwards, the grape variety spread to various wine-growing regions in Europe. In Italy, Pinot Blanc is known as Pinot Bianco. The variety has become particularly important in the northern Italian regions of South Tyrol, Friuli, and Lombardy. South Tyrol in particular has proven to be ideal for growing Pinot Blanc due to its climatic conditions, where the Mediterranean climate meets Alpine influences. The leaves of the plant are medium-sized, rounded and deeply cut. The surface is shiny and medium green. The leaf stalks often have a reddish colour. The grapes had a slightly conical shape. The berries are medium-sized, round, and greenish yellow in colour. The grapes grow in loosely arranged clusters. The berries of the Pinot Blanc grape are thin-skinned and have a juicy, mild taste. The colour varies from a pale-yellow green to a slightly reddish tone, especially when the grapes are fully ripe. The Pinot Blanc vine tends to grow moderately, and its grapes ripen early. Yields can vary depending on vineyard location and farming methods, but in general yields are moderate. The diversity of vineyards in South Tyrol, ranging from lower altitudes to higher slopes, allows for different expressions of Pinot Blanc to be created depending on where the grapes are grown. Pinot Blanc wines from South Tyrol are often characterized by a fresh and fruity aroma profile. Typical aromas can include citrus fruits such as lemon and green apple, accompanied by subtle floral notes. The pronounced minerality is due to the different soil types in South Tyrol, which gives the wines additional complexity and depth. Pinot Blanc from South Tyrol are often characterized by a lively acidity that gives them freshness and elegance. The combination of ripe fruit and lively acidity makes these wines generally well balanced and refreshing.
