Description

Vermentino di Sardegna DOC BIO 2022 / Antonella Corda / Sardinia

White wine from Italy

Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, is an important wine region of Italy. The vineyards are mostly located on the slopes of the mountains and benefit from the Mediterranean climate characterized by hot and dry summers and mild winters. Viticulture is closely linked to Sardinian culture and tradition and reflects the island's unique landscape and history.

The young winemaker Antonella Corda from the village of Serdiana north of Cagliari in the south of the beautiful Mediterranean island of Sardinia is the new discovery of the Italian wine scene, who twice in a row received the coveted 3 glasses from Gambero Rosso with her red Cannonau. The history of Cantina Antonella Corda cannot be separated from that of its founder. A childhood surrounded by vineyards, a family of winemakers for generations, a mother who transmits the love of the land and a father who teaches her the passion for work. Antonella inherited the family tradition in 2010 and took over the management of the company, transforming it into a great project that was innovative compared to its past: to create a boutique winery capable of producing fine Sardinian wines in order to represent the country around Serdiana in the world.

The white grape variety Vermentino is a late-ripening white wine variety that probably has its origins in Italy. The grape is often referred to as the "Mediterranean grape" and is considered one of Italy's finest white wine varieties. The grape variety prefers dry and sunny climates and grows well on sandy, gravelly, and rocky soils.

Antonella Corda's Vermentino di Sardegna DOC comes from a vineyard called "Mitza Manna", which extends over six hectares at an altitude of 200m asl. and is planted with native white Vermentino and Nuragus vines. The soil is sandy and loamy, and a significant amount of calcium enhances the wines with natural freshness and a floral bouquet. The grapes are harvested by hand in cassettes at the beginning of September of each year and immediately transported to the wine cellar. After crushing the grapes, cold maceration begins, followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. The final aging in stainless steel on the fine lees lasts six months.

This Vermentino di Sardegna presents itself to the eye with a light straw yellow. The nose gets its share from an intense bouquet of orange, grapefruit, citrus blossoms, and sage. Finally, this Sardinian has a well-balanced, dry taste with well-integrated acidity. Its softness is emphasized by warm background tones.

At a perfect drinking temperature of around 8 to 10°C, the Vermentino di Sardegna DOC from Antonella Corda is ideal as an aperitif. This white wine is also an excellent accompaniment to fish appetizers and dishes with crustaceans. In general, it pairs beautifully with light Mediterranean fare.

Grape variety

VERMENTINO

The VERMENTINO grape is mainly grown in Italy, but also in France, Spain, and Corsica. It is particularly popular in Tuscany and Sardinia, where it is highly valued for its ability to thrive in dry and hot climates. The grape is often referred to as the "Mediterranean grape" and is considered one of Italy's finest white wine varieties. The Vermentino grape is a white grape variety with a medium to large berry and a relatively thin skin. The bunches of grapes are loose-berried and grow in large, conical clusters that typically weigh between 120 and 200 grams. The grape variety prefers dry and sunny climates and grows well on sandy, gravelly, and rocky soils. The vine fruit has high acidity and moderate sugar levels, which helps wines made from this varietal to be dry and lively. Vermentino grapes ripen relatively late, which can cause them to develop a higher concentration of aromas and flavours. The grape has typical aromas of citrus fruits such as lime, grapefruit, and lemon, but aromas of peach, apricot and almonds can also be found in the wines.
