Description

“Vignaquadra” Passerina Terre di Chieti IGT 2022 / Collefrisio / Abruzzo
White wine from Italy

The Collefrisio winery is nestled in the idyllic village of Frisa in the southern Abruzzo region, set between the Adriatic coastline and the striking slopes of the Majella National Park. This privileged location creates a unique microclimate that offers the vines optimal conditions: cool mountain breezes bring freshness, while gentle maritime winds ensure a perfect balance of warmth and humidity. Founders Amedeo De Luca and Antonio Patricelli are devoted to producing wines of the highest quality, crafted organically and without the use of animal-derived products. Their ambition is to create modern wines with a clear identity - wines that appeal to international markets while remaining true to authentic Italian tradition.

One of the estate’s most important grape varieties is Passerina, an indigenous white grape of central Italy, cultivated primarily in Abruzzo, Marche and Lazio. It is distinguished by its small, yellow-green berries with juicy flesh and an aromatic profile marked by citrus and apricot. Passerina wines are typically dry, with lively acidity and pronounced minerality. Thanks to their moderate alcohol content and easy drinkability, they are considered ideal companions to seafood, fish dishes and Mediterranean starters, offering an intriguing alternative to international varieties such as Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc.

The Vignaquadra Passerina Terre di Chieti IGT is grown on stony soils in south-east facing vineyards at around 200 metres above sea level. The traditional pergola abruzzese training system shields the grapes from intense sunlight and rainfall, while ensuring excellent ventilation. At the end of September, the grapes are carefully hand-harvested before being gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel under strict temperature control. Maturation in thermoclimatised tanks preserves the purity and freshness of the wine, which is finally bottled under sterile cold conditions.

In the glass, Vignaquadra reveals a clear straw-yellow hue with greenish highlights. The bouquet is dominated by vibrant citrus notes of bergamot and lime, complemented by floral nuances reminiscent of the Mediterranean maquis and a delicate touch of honey. On the palate, it is fresh and lively, with harmoniously integrated acidity, medium body and mineral depth. The finish is long and elegant, carried by citrus and blossom with a subtle hint of honey.

Served at 8–10 °C, Vignaquadra Passerina fully expresses its character. It delights as a refined aperitif and pairs beautifully with risottos, shellfish, and fish dishes from the grill or pan. With its crystalline freshness and unadulterated authenticity, it reflects the essence of Abruzzo and offers wine lovers a truly distinctive tasting experience.

  • Quality Designation: Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT)
  • Grape: 100% Passerina.
  • Origin and soil conditions: The Vignaquadra Passerina originates from the hills of southern Abruzzo in the province of Chieti. The vineyards are situated between the Adriatic Sea and the Majella National Park, benefiting from two defining influences: cooling air currents from the mountains and balancing breezes from the sea. This location creates marked temperature variations between day and night, preserving the freshness and aromatic character of the grapes. The Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and cool nights, imparts the wine with clear structure, vibrant acidity and mineral elegance.
  • Vinification: The grapes are carefully hand-harvested at the end of September to ensure that only healthy, fully ripe fruit is selected. Following gentle pressing, the wine undergoes traditional white vinification, with fermentation carried out under controlled temperature. This process preserves the delicate aromas of the Passerina grape, allowing them to develop with clarity and precision. The wine then matures in thermoclimatised stainless-steel tanks, which safeguard its purity and freshness. Finally, sterile cold bottling stabilises the wine and delivers its aromatic expression unaltered into the glass.
  • Scent: The bouquet of the wine reveals a clear and intense citrus character, with bergamot and lime standing out prominently. This freshness is complemented by floral accents of white blossoms from the Mediterranean maquis, lending the aroma an elegant lightness. A delicate note of honey completes the aromatic profile, its subtle, almost ethereal sweetness providing a harmonious balance to the mineral foundation.
  • Taste: On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively, carried by a pronounced yet harmoniously integrated acidity. Its sound structure with medium body lends the fruit aromas clear definition and creates a well-balanced overall impression. The mineral foundation, shaped by the proximity of the Majella mountains and the Adriatic coast, adds further depth and character. The finish is long, with citrus notes and floral nuances remaining present, accompanied by a subtle touch of honey. The texture is taut and precise, with a fine interplay between acidity and delicate sweetness, making the wine both refreshing and elegant.

Grape variety

PASSERINA

Passerina is an indigenous white grape variety of central Italy, cultivated primarily in the regions of Marche, Abruzzo and Lazio. Known under the synonyms Biancame or Bianchello, it belongs to the time-honoured varieties that have shaped the regional wine landscape for centuries. Its grapes are small to medium in size, yellow green in colour, and distinguished by their juicy flesh. Typical is an aromatic profile with fresh notes of citrus and apricot, lending the wines a lively yet elegant character. Passerina is predominantly used in the production of dry white wines, though it also finds expression in sparkling and dessert styles. The wines are marked by pronounced acidity and minerality, which give them freshness and structure. These qualities make them particularly well-suited to seafood, fish dishes and savoury starters, while they also serve beautifully as an aperitif or companion to light summer fare. With their generally moderate alcohol content and effortless drinkability, Passerina wines offer an intriguing alternative to well-known international varieties such as Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. Their growing popularity is owed not only to their versatility but also to their authenticity: Passerina embodies the Mediterranean wine tradition and conveys the distinctive character of Italy’s coastal and hillside landscapes with unadulterated clarity in the glass.
