Description

“Vignaquadra” Passerina Terre di Chieti IGT 2022 / Collefrisio / Abruzzo
White wine from Italy

The Collefrisio winery is based in the picturesque town of Frisa, southwest of the port city of Pescara. Here, between the gentle coast of the Adriatic Sea and the steep slopes of the Majella National Park in southern Abruzzo, the vine plant finds a perfect habitat. The presence of the Majella and the sea positively influence the pedoclimatic environment and determine the ideal microclimate for the maturation of different grape varieties. The owners Amedeo De Luca and Antonio Patricelli are totally dedicated to the production of quality wines. They want to offer the market products with high added value, produced organically and without using products of animal origin in the production process. Collefrisio's wines aim for a contemporary taste that demands freshness and depth without giving up the pleasure of sharing and speaks many different languages.

The Passerina is an Italian grape variety that is mainly cultivated in the regions of Abruzzo, Marche, and Lazio. It is a white grape variety known for its aromatic and fresh wines. The grapes are small and spherical with thin skins showing good resistance to fungal diseases. Passerina wines can be served as an aperitif or with light summer dishes. They are usually easy to drink and have a low alcohol content. If you like to drink Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, you will find a wonderful alternative with the Passerina.

The Passerina grapes for the “Vignaquadra” Passerina Terre di Chieti IGT are cultivated in a hilly area on rocky soils facing southeast with the “Pergola abruzzese” vine training system at an average altitude of 200m asl. The leaves of the pergola serve both as protection against too much sunlight and against excessive rain. In addition, the hut-like pergola system allows optimal ventilation of the bunches of grapes. The grapes are hand-picked at the end of each September. The fruits are cut individually by hand, placed in small baskets, and transported to the wine cellar for immediate processing. Here the grapes are crushed, destemmed, and gently pressed for the first fermentation. Maceration takes place at low temperature and thermocontrolled alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Finally, this exceptional white wine is bottled using sterile cold bottling.

Collefrisio's "Vignaquadra" Passerina Terre di Chieti IGT stands out for the characteristic acidic notes that accompany this autochthonous grape variety. In addition, the Passerina naturally has a good concentration of sugar. In the glass it shows itself in a straw yellow, which is streaked with greenish reflections. This white wine from central Italy smells intensely of citrus, bergamot, and the white blossoms of the evergreen macchia. On the palate it is dry and has a nice acidity that makes it appear fresh. Otherwise, you will be surprised by the excellent taste and olfactory persistence.

At an optimal drinking temperature of around 8 to 10°C, the Passerina Terre di Chieti with its freshness and fruity and floral aroma is ideal in combination with risottos, shellfish, and fried fish. Wonderful as an aperitif and as an accompaniment to light Mediterranean starters.

Grape variety

PASSERINA

The PASSERIA is an autochthonous white grape variety that is mainly cultivated in the central Italian regions of Marche, Abruzzo, and Lazio. The variety is also called Biancame and Bianchello. It is often used to produce white wines, but also for sparkling wines and dessert wines. The grapes of the Passerina vine are small to medium-sized and yellow green in colour. The berries are juicy and have a fruity aroma with notes of citrus and apricots. Passerina wines are generally dry and have high acidity and pronounced minerality. Due to their high acidity, Passerina wines are well suited to pairing with seafood, fish dishes and savoury appetizers. They can also be served as an aperitif or with light summer dishes. Passerina wines tend to be easy to drink and have a low alcohol content. They are a good choice for wine lovers looking for an alternative to the usual white wines like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
