Description

“Vignaquadra” Pecorino Terre di Chieti IGT BIO 2022 / Collefrisio / Abruzzo
White wine from Italy

The Collefrisio winery is based in the picturesque town of Frisa, southwest of the port city of Pescara. Here, between the gentle coast of the Adriatic Sea and the steep slopes of the Majella National Park in southern Abruzzo, the vine plant finds a perfect habitat. The presence of the Majella and the sea positively influence the pedoclimatic environment and determine the ideal microclimate for the maturation of different grape varieties. The owners Amedeo De Luca and Antonio Patricelli are totally dedicated to the production of quality wines. They want to offer the market products with high added value, produced organically and without using products of animal origin in the production process. Collefrisio's wines aim for a contemporary taste that demands freshness and depth without giving up the pleasure of sharing and speaks many different languages.

The Pecorino is an autochthonous white wine variety from central Italy and is grown in the regions of Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche, and Umbria. The Pecorino grape is also known as "uva delle pecore" (i.e., grape of the sheep). The origin of this name highlights the close relationship between livestock and agriculture in this rural region of Italy (Abruzzo). In fact, in this area, the Pecorino grape has always been present in the immediate vicinity of the pastures. The early maturing, vigorous variety only produces fluctuating yields. The wines made from it are fruity and have a fine acidity.

The Pecorino grape for the “Vignaquadra” Pecorino Terre di Chieti IGT is cultivated in a hilly area facing southeast with the “Pergola abruzzese” vine training system at an altitude of 237m asl. The pergola serves as protection from too much sun and rain. The grapes are hand-picked in the third decade of September. The fruits are cut individually by hand, placed in small baskets, and transported to the wine cellar for immediate processing. Here the grapes are crushed, destemmed, and gently pressed for the first fermentation. Maceration takes place at low temperature and thermocontrolled alcoholic fermentation occur in stainless steel tanks.

A fresh and versatile wine, Collefrisio's "Vignaquadra" Pecorino Terre di Chieti IGT 2022 is the typical expression of an ancient local vine that has been restored in the last fifteen years thanks to the efforts of researchers and producers who were the first to believe in its potential was thrown into the limelight. With its straw yellow color streaked with golden reflections, this fantastic white wine produces intense notes of green tea and ripe peach on the nose. Dry and spicy on the palate, a great structure develops with a nicely integrated acidity and a long persistence.

At a recommended drinking temperature of around 10 to 12°C, the Pecorino Terre di Chieti IGT is ideal as an aperitif. It also goes well with appetizers, light first courses, fish dishes and dishes based on white meat.

Grape variety

PECORINO

The PECORINO is an Italian white wine variety that is grown in the Marche, Abruzzo, and Umbria regions. The origin of the name is uncertain, but it is believed to derive either from the sheep (ital. pecora) that graze in the vineyards or from the similarity in taste to pecorino cheese. The grapes of the Pecorino variety are light yellow in colour and small to medium-sized. The wines are dry and have a fresh acidity accompanied by aromas of yellow fruits such as apricot, peach and mango. Some wines may also feature notes of herbs, aniseed, and white pepper. Known for their versatility, Pecorino wines are ideal both as an aperitif and to accompany fish dishes, seafood, pasta, and white meats. The wines are also able to endure longer aging processes, evolving into more complex and richer wines over the years. The Pecorino vine was almost extinct but was rediscovered by some winemakers in the 1980s and is now increasingly being cultivated. The demand for Pecorino wines is constantly increasing due to their high quality and unique flavour profile.
