Description

"Vigneto Morino" Chardonnay Langhe DOC 2020 / Batasiolo / Piedmont

White wine from Italy

The Dogliani family's Beni di Batasiolo winery is located in the town of La Morra, southwest of the famous truffle town of Alba in Piedmont and is one of the largest wineries in the Langhe. Here, in the Langhe, wines thrive that have made this region famous all over the world. In 1978, the Dogliani acquired the historic Kiola winery, thereby securing the best locations for the Nebbiolo da Barolo. The Dogliani brothers then decided to give these various small wineries a new name, taking inspiration from the Batasiolo vineyard, where the nucleus of the historic winery is located. Thus, was born Beni di Batasiolo, the new winery surrounded by the rolling hills of the homonymous vineyard. In the old local dialect, the word "beni" means property or estate. The name Beni di Batasiolo thus contains an ancestral way of life of this area, which has its essence in the inseparable bond between the farmer and his vineyard.

Beni di Batasiolo grows the white grapes for the "Vigneto Morino" Chardonnay Langhe DOC in the Langhe. The calcareous soils that predominate here give the Chardonnay a mineral quality and emphasize its acidity. Piedmont's continental climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, helps the Chardonnay grapes maintain good acidity and ripen slowly, contributing to the development of complex aromas.

The Chardonnay grapes are harvested by hand at the beginning of September. Separated from the trunks, the fruits are then chopped and gently pressed. The pressed grapes are then cold macerated for 24-48 hours and fermentation is carried out in French oak barrels. The wine then rests on the lees in French oak barrels with periodic Batonnage. The term Batonage refers to the stirring or agitation of the lees and sunken solids in the wine barrel to bring the wine into contact with these substances. This promotes the wine's flavour development and texture as the yeast creates compounds during the fermentation process that can add complexity to the wine.

In the glass, this Piedmontese Chardonnay appears with an intense straw yellow and immediately develops a rich scent with hints of tropical fruits, citrus, grapefruit, honey, and vanilla. The "Vigneto Morino" Chardonnay Langhe DOC has a balanced, broad, dry taste with an enhancement of the aromatic spectrum already perceived with the nose.

Chilled at around 6 to 8°C, the Chardonnay from Beni di Batasiolo is ideal in combination with starters, seafood, white meat dishes and fish. The structure of this wood-aged white wine also makes it an ideal complement to red meat tartare, Italian cured ham, oysters in particular and mussels in general.

Grape variety

CHARDONNAY

Chardonnay is a widely known and widespread grape variety that is primarily used for the production of white wines. The Chardonnay grape originally comes from the Burgundy region of France, but it has spread to many wine-growing regions around the world over the last few centuries. Chardonnay wines are known for their versatility and ability to well reflect the influence of terroir and the winemaking process. The leaves of the Chardonnay plant are typically large, dark green, and palmately lobed. The clusters are medium to large in size and can be densely packed. The berries are rounded and have a golden-yellow to green-yellow colour. In Piedmont, Chardonnay is grown particularly in the Langhe and Monferrato areas. The calcareous soils that predominate here give the Chardonnay a mineral quality and emphasize its acidity. Piedmont's continental climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, helps the Chardonnay grapes maintain good acidity and ripen slowly, contributing to the development of complex aromas.
