Description

Weißburgunder Festival Südtirol DOC 2022 / Cantina Merano / South-Tirol

White wine from Italy

In 2010, the two traditional winery cooperatives of the Burggrafenamt, the Cantina Burggräfler and the Cantina Merano winery merged. This resulted in the Cantina Merano Burggräfler, which now has 380 members and cultivates 260 hectares of vineyards. As a result, the western cultivation area of South Tyrol from Lana in the south via Merano to Riffian in the north and Lagundo to Kastelbell in the west has been united under one roof.

The Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder) grape feels particularly at home on the barren soil and sunny slopes in the Merano area and in Vinschgau. It has been cultivated extremely successfully in South Tyrol for over 150 years and has become the leading white variety in recent years. A true all-rounder.

The "Festival" wine line from the Cantina Meran Burggräfler in Marling brings together meaningful and varietal wines from South Tyrol. This diverse selection of white and red wines is intended to send you on a journey that will engage all your senses.

The vines for the Weißburgunder Festival Südtirol DOC are located in the communities of Marlengo, Meran, Dorf Tirol and Labers at altitudes of 450 to 550m asl. and thrive on soils that consist mainly of moraine debris interspersed with slightly loamy sand and are light, permeable, and humic. After the harvest and soft pressing of the grapes, alcoholic fermentation takes place in small stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature. This is followed by partial malolactic fermentation and storage and aging on the fine lees for five months.

With its brilliant green-yellow colour, the Pinot Blanc Festival Südtirol DOC from the Cantina Merano exudes a subtle and fresh bouquet of green apples and citrus fruits. In the background you can still notice caramel and nut. On the palate, this white wine is dry, rich, and balanced. Its lively fruit acid makes it peppy with aromas of lemon, quince, and nutmeg. The finale is nice and short and a bit playful.

This Pinot Blanc or Weissburgunder is a wine of the highest quality and refinement. Its optimal enjoyment is achieved at a recommended temperature of 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, allowing the fresh aromas and pleasant acidity of this exquisite white wine to shine. The Pinot Blanc is an excellent choice for social occasions as well as relaxed evenings. Its versatility is evident both as an aperitif and as a companion to light outdoor meals. With its remarkable freshness, moderate acidity, and fruity notes, it proves to be a perfect complement to delicate appetizers such as salads, carpaccio, or Mediterranean antipasti. The Pinot Blanc particularly excels when paired with poultry dishes like grilled chicken or turkey. It is also an ideal choice for seafood, fish dishes, and light meats such as pork tenderloin. Its nuanced flavour profile makes it a versatile companion for a variety of culinary delights. For an original touch, we recommend this South Tyrolean Pinot Blanc with fruits and sweet desserts. Its unique taste profile adds a special elegance to these combinations, rounding off the gastronomic experience at the highest level.

Grape variety

WEISSBURGUNDER (PINOT BLANC)

Pinot Blanc or Weissburgunder is a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir and has its roots in Burgundy, France. The grape variety is believed to have emerged through natural mutations over time. From the Middle Ages onwards, the grape variety spread to various wine-growing regions in Europe. In Italy, Pinot Blanc is known as Pinot Bianco. The variety has become particularly important in the northern Italian regions of South Tyrol, Friuli, and Lombardy. South Tyrol in particular has proven to be ideal for growing Pinot Blanc due to its climatic conditions, where the Mediterranean climate meets Alpine influences. The leaves of the plant are medium-sized, rounded and deeply cut. The surface is shiny and medium green. The leaf stalks often have a reddish colour. The grapes had a slightly conical shape. The berries are medium-sized, round, and greenish yellow in colour. The grapes grow in loosely arranged clusters. The berries of the Pinot Blanc grape are thin-skinned and have a juicy, mild taste. The colour varies from a pale-yellow green to a slightly reddish tone, especially when the grapes are fully ripe. The Pinot Blanc vine tends to grow moderately, and its grapes ripen early. Yields can vary depending on vineyard location and farming methods, but in general yields are moderate. The diversity of vineyards in South Tyrol, ranging from lower altitudes to higher slopes, allows for different expressions of Pinot Blanc to be created depending on where the grapes are grown. Pinot Blanc wines from South Tyrol are often characterized by a fresh and fruity aroma profile. Typical aromas can include citrus fruits such as lemon and green apple, accompanied by subtle floral notes. The pronounced minerality is due to the different soil types in South Tyrol, which gives the wines additional complexity and depth. Pinot Blanc from South Tyrol are often characterized by a lively acidity that gives them freshness and elegance. The combination of ripe fruit and lively acidity makes these wines generally well balanced and refreshing.
