Description

“Amaranto” Sangiovese Maremma Toscana DOC BIO 2019 / Podere San Cristoforo / Tuscany

Red wine from Italy

Podere San Cristoforo is a renowned winery in the Tuscan Maremma region of Italy. Located near the village of Gavorrano, halfway between the cities of Livorno and Grosseto, the winery extends over a picturesque landscape of rolling hills and olive groves. The winegrowers of the Podere San Cristoforo are known throughout Italy for their high-quality red wines. They attach great importance to artisanal traditions and use a combination of modern and traditional farming methods to produce wines of outstanding quality. In addition, there are the special soil conditions and the microclimate of the Maremma region, which contribute to the characteristics of the wines.

The Maremma offers ideal conditions for the cultivation of Sangiovese. The Mediterranean climate that prevails here, with hot summers and mild winters, promotes good ripening of the grapes. Soils are often sandy or gritty in texture and provide good drainage, which is beneficial for Sangiovese. The grapes of the Sangiovese vine are medium-sized and dark blue to black in colour. The berries have a thick skin rich in tannins. This gives the wines structure, tannic presence, and the ability to age well. Cultivated by the mysterious Etruscans, Sangiovese has now become one of the most important grape varieties in Italy, from which, for example, the famous Chianti is made.

The Sangiovese grapes are harvested by hand during the first ten days of September and only the ripest fruit are transported to the winery for vinification. Here the grapes are destemmed, selected again and carefully pressed. Both maceration and spontaneous fermentation take place in stainless steel vats. The subsequent maturation then takes place in used French oak barriques and lasts about ten months. The Amaranto is then bottled unfiltered during the waning moon. Before this exceptional red wine is finally marketed, it rests in its bottle for a few months, during which time it undergoes significant refinement.

The Amaranto Sangiovese Maremma Toscana presents a very pure Sangiovese style: friendly and elegant, but also juicy and with great strength and substance. This wine is named after the scarlet plant, which in ancient Greece was called "amaranth", i.e., the plant "that does not wither", as well as the friendship and respect for nature of the Podere San Cristoforo winery. With its brilliant ruby red colour, it exudes an elegant aroma with pleasantly fruity notes of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry and strawberry, leaving room for herbaceous undergrowth notes. Finishing off with spicy scents of black pepper, cinnamon and liquorice. Dry on the palate, of medium intensity and structure, with a wonderful harmony between aromas and flavours.

After decanting and at an optimal drinking temperature of around 16 and 18°C, the Amaranto Sangiovese Maremma Toscana DOC goes well with both white and red meat - try it with grilled food! Of course, it is also a good accompaniment to hearty Italian appetizers and well-ripened cheeses. Nice just like that, with a side dish of bread, salami, and cheese.

SANGIOVESE is a red grape. It is one of the most important and most common varieties in Italy and main ingredient of the famous Chianti.
