Description

Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2022 / Rocca Bernarda / Friuli Venezia Giulia

White wine from Italy

The renowned winery Rocca Bernarda is one of the oldest wineries in Friuli Venezia Giulia and was founded in 1567 in Corno di Rosazzo near Udine by Bernardo di Valvason Maniago. In the present it is operated by the Order of the Knights of Malta. The cultivated vineyards cover around fifty hectares, the majority of which are newly planted, with a planting density of around 5,500 vines, and using material derived from clone selection and mass selection carried out on the farm. In this way, the new vines are already acclimatized to the terroir and the quality is optimized. All vineyards benefit from ideal climatic conditions, including warm summers, cool breezes from the Alps and optimal sunshine. Rocca Bernarda attaches great importance to traditional winemaking techniques and an environmentally friendly approach. Strict quality controls are carried out throughout the winemaking process to ensure wines of exceptional quality.

The Friulano, also known as Tocai Friulano, is a white grape native to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of north-eastern Italy. The cluster of this variety has a medium to large berry shape and is oval to slightly oblong. The colour of the berries varies from yellowish green to golden yellow, depending on the degree of ripeness. The shell is thin and delicate, making it difficult to handle.

The grapes for Rocca Bernarda's Friulano Friuli DOC are grown in a hilly area called the Colli Orientali del Friuli, at an average altitude of 150 m asl. Half of the soil here is limestone and clay and the other half is made up of sand and clay, which is ideal for viticulture. Cultivated with the Cappuccina (double arch) and Guyot training systems, the Friulano grapes are harvested in the second week of September and immediately transported to the winery, where they are destemmed and crushed. After a short maceration on the skins, the very gentle pressing follows, from which the free run must is obtained. The temperature-controlled fermentation in steel tanks ends after about 15 days. The subsequent aging of the new Friulano on the lees for at least five months completes its maturation.

The Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali DOC can probably be described as the most typical white wine from the Friuli region and is presented in a beautiful wine glass with a shiny straw yellow colour. In the nose it unfolds a delicate bouquet with notes of butter and a light almond aroma. The palate is full, dry with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste.

At an ideal drinking temperature of approximately 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, Rocca Bernarda's Friulano complements an entire menu and is also excellent for casual sipping. Furthermore, it pairs exceptionally well with fresh seafood such as oysters, mussels, or prawns. Antipasti featuring air-dried ham, salami, and mild cheeses are also a successful combination. The crisp acidity of the Friulano complements mixed salads with citrus dressings or light olive oil. This exquisite white wine also pairs superbly with grilled fish, baked cod, or trout, enhancing the delicate flavours of the fish. Local Friulian dishes like Frico (a cheese and potato dish) or risotto with San Daniele ham can harmonize well with Friulano. It also serves as a fitting accompaniment to poultry dishes, whether roasted chicken, turkey, or duck. Milder cheeses such as Asiago or Montasio can tastefully complement the fruity notes of the wine. Pasta with light vegetable sauces and risotto-like dishes with asparagus or mushrooms pair well with Friulano. This wine proves to be surprisingly fitting with fresh seafood, whether in the form of fish tacos or ceviche. Lastly, Friulano reveals itself as a delightful surprise when enjoyed as an aperitif wine.

Grape variety

FRIULANO

The Friulano, an indigenous white grape variety, flourishes in the enchanting region of Friuli-Julian-Veneto in northeastern Italy. Once known as Tocai Friulano, the name had to be altered due to EU legal disputes with Hungary, which produces a wine called Tokaj. Today, the grape variety is simply referred to as Friulano. The roots of this noble grape date back to the 17th century, likely originating in the Friuli region and spreading from there. The enduring tradition of Friulano in Friuli-Julian-Veneto reflects the diversity of the terroir, stretching from the majestic Alps in the north to the gentle Adriatic in the south. This diversity shapes the character of Friulano. Winemakers appreciate the remarkable adaptability of the grape variety to the local terroir, with Friuli-Julian-Veneto renowned for its multifaceted terroir. Over time, wine experts and vintners have tirelessly worked on cultivation methods and oenological techniques to consistently enhance the quality of Friulano wines. This includes meticulous clone selection and adjustments in vineyard management. The medium to large, rounded leaves of the Friulano vine testify to its characteristic elegance and contribute to its growth behaviour. The grapes of the Friulano plant present themselves as medium-sized with a loose to medium-density structure. Whether cylindrical or conical in shape, the grapes impart a unique imprint on the wines. The berries themselves are medium-sized, gleaming in a seductive yellow-green hue. The thin-skinned berries contribute to susceptibility to Botrytis (noble rot), but simultaneously favour the production of aromatic wines. The adaptability of Friulano vines to various soils and microclimates is a key reason for their popularity in different wine regions. This grape variety exhibits a medium-strong growth behaviour and tends to ripen relatively early, allowing for successful cultivation in cooler regions before the autumn frosts set in. From light and fresh to complex and structured, Friulano offers winemakers a broad spectrum of possibilities. It is utilized both as a varietal wine and in harmonious cuvées, showcasing the versatility of this captivating grape variety.
