Description

"La Mia Italia" Primitivo IGP Puglia da uve leggermente appassite 2022 / Conti Zecca / Apulia

Container of 6 bottles

Red wine from Italy

Salento is a macro-region of Puglia and the southernmost region of Italy. It includes the entire province of Lecce and extends north to parts of the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto. Washed by the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Ionian Sea to the west, Salento is a flat land with many olive groves, white beaches, farmhouses, and vineyards scattered across the countryside.

For more than 500 years, when Naples-born Francesco Antonio Zecca emigrated to fertile Puglia in 1580, the noble Neapolitan Zecca family had been cultivating vineyards in Leverano, in the heart of Salento. In this region, located in the extreme south-east of the Italian boot, there are almost ideal conditions for viticulture. And here the Zecca family decided a long time ago to focus primarily on autochthonous Apulian grape varieties, from which such wonderful wines can be made.

Over time, the identities of people and place have overlapped, linking memory and nature. A harmonious coexistence of passion and respect was born, peacefully and discreetly guarded by those involved in the hard work of Conti Zecca.

The "La Mia Italia" Primitivo IGP Puglia da uve leggermente appassite thrives on calcareous and siliceous alluvial soil in the province of Lecce in the Leverano cultivation zone in Puglia. The plant is cultivated using the cordon training system. The red grapes are harvested in the first week of September and are slightly sun-dried [appasire with the appassimento technique]. Then they are destemmed and carefully pressed. A traditional maceration follows for four to six days. The must ferments in steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 20°C, with constant pumping over and quenching. The expansion then takes place in stainless steel and cement tanks. There follows a brief concluding passage in the wood.

With its deep ruby red, the "La Mia Italia" Primitivo IGP Puglia da uve leggermente appassite from Conti Zecca is a wonderful Primitivo with a lavish abundance of aromas. Notes of red fruits dominate the nose, accompanied by spicy aromas of tobacco. You can feel the warmth of the south straight away and the smell gives you an impression of how silky and full this red wine will be on the palate. At an optimal drinking temperature of around 16°C, breath-taking fruit dominates on the tongue, which is semi-dry, full-bodied, round, and warm. Again, one travels in thought to southern Italy. The tannins are excellently integrated, and the finale never ends.

At a recommended serving temperature of approximately 14 to 16 degrees Celsius, the "La Mia Italia" Primitivo IGP Puglia reveals its full potential. With its robust structure and intense aromas, this wine pairs exceptionally well with meat dishes. Grilled or braised beef, lamb, or game meat benefit from the robust and fruity characteristics of this wine. The fruit-forward nature of Primitivo complements pasta dishes, especially those with rich tomato-based sauces. Pizza, topped with hearty ingredients, is perfectly accompanied by this wine as well. Various cheese varieties, particularly aged hard cheese or robust blue cheese, find a tasteful complement in the company of "La Mia Italia." Thanks to its origin in the southern Italian region of Apulia, Primitivo expresses its best qualities when paired with Mediterranean flavours. Dishes prepared with olive oil, herbs, tomatoes, and garlic can be wonderfully complemented by this wine. The bold tannins and fruity aromas also make "La Mia Italia" an excellent choice for barbecue dishes. Grilled meat, spicy ribs, or even grilled vegetables can be enhanced in flavour by this wine. The "La Mia Italia" Primitivo IGP Puglia is not only suitable for festive occasions but also for social gatherings. Serve it as an accompaniment to tapas, antipasti, or other small bites. However, even on its own, without the company of food, this well-balanced and pleasantly structured Primitivo can be enjoyed.

Grape variety

PRIMITIVO

The Primitivo grape variety, a red grape, is predominantly found in the southern Italian region of Apulia. In this area, characterized by a warm Mediterranean climate, the Primitivo grape thrives ideally. Originally, its roots seem to lie along the eastern Adriatic coast in the Dalmatia region. In the 18th century, the Primitivo grape made its way to Apulia, especially around the town of Manduria, where it became native. The name "Primitivo" likely derives from the early ripening of the grapes (Italian: "primo" means "first"). DNA analyses in the 1990s revealed the genetic identity of Primitivo and Zinfandel, bringing international attention to the Primitivo grape variety. This realization also increased the popularity of Primitivo wines from Apulia outside of Italy. In recent decades, Primitivo cultivation in Apulia has evolved, with winemakers increasingly focusing on producing high-quality wines. Modern cultivation methods, careful winemaking, and the use of barrels for aging contribute to improving wine quality. The leaves of the Primitivo plant are large, hand-shaped, and have a medium to dark green colour. Depending on the subspecies, the shape of the leaves may vary, but they generally remain five-lobed. The grapes of the Primitivo vine are conical to cylindrical, with densely arranged, medium to large berries of dark blue to violet colour. These berries are round, medium to large, and characterized by a thick skin. The flesh is juicy and has a high sugar content, which can later result in robust wines. Primitivo vines tend to grow vigorously and develop a considerable leaf mass. They adapt well to various soils and climate conditions. The relatively early ripening of the Primitivo grape, contributing to its name, allows winemakers an early harvest. The historical development of the Primitivo grape is marked by migration, its connection with Zinfandel, and the gradual recognition as a distinct, significant grape variety. Today, Primitivo enjoys recognition both in Italy and internationally as a sophisticated grape for producing robust and characterful red wines.
