Description

Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC 2022 / Rocca Bernarda / Friuli Venezia Giulia

White wine from Italy

The Rocca Bernarda winery is one of the oldest wineries in Friuli Venezia Giulia and was founded in 1567 by Bernardo di Valvason Maniago. In the present it is operated by the Order of the Knights of Malta. The cultivated vineyards cover around fifty hectares, the majority of which are newly planted, with a planting density of around 5,500 vines, and using material derived from clone selection and mass selection carried out on the farm. In this way, the new vines are already acclimatized to the terroir and the quality is optimized.

Mainly grown in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northern Italy, the Ribolla Gialla grape variety has many names and has been cultivated in the area since at least the 13th century. The Ribolla Gialla grape is characterized by its yellow-green colour, which also explains its name "Gialla" (Italian for yellow). The grapes are medium-sized and have a thin skin, which requires great care in their handling by the winemaker. The grape variety is known for its high acidity and fresh, aromatic profile, which includes aromas of citrus, floral and herbal notes.

The grapes for Ribolla Gialla from Rocca Bernarda are grown in a hilly area called Colli Orientali del Friuli, at an average altitude of 120 m asl. Half of the soil here is limestone and clay and the other half is made up of sand and clay, which is ideal for viticulture. The climatic conditions with warm days and cold nights are also excellent.

Cultivated with the Cappuccina (double arch) and Guyot training systems, the Ribolla Gialla grapes are harvested by hand very late in the year and, to prevent the grapes from oxidizing, are quickly transported to the winery in small crates and immediately destemmed and pressed. The fermentation with the addition of selected yeasts takes place at a constant temperature of 20°C. The subsequent malolactic fermentation lasts about five months and ensures that the Ribolla becomes more mature and smoother. This wonderful white wine is bottled in the following April.

The Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC from the Rocca Bernarda winery presents itself in a beautiful wine glass with a straw yellow colour with greenish reflections. The bouquet is fine and fruity, reminiscent of green apples. Fine noses recognize notes of medlar and apricot, which are enriched by floral nuances of linden and broom. On the palate it is fresh, dry, spicy and endowed with a pleasant softness and good persistence.

At a recommended serving temperature of approximately 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, the Ribolla Gialla Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC from Rocca Bernarda reveals its virtues. Thanks to its freshness and easy drinkability, it is excellent as an aperitif before a meal. Ribolla Gialla is perfect for light starters and antipasti such as Caprese salad, bruschetta, or smoked salmon. Its fresh acidity and light structure make it the perfect companion for a variety of vegetable dishes, from salads to grilled vegetables to vegetarian pasta dishes. The freshness and lively acidity of Ribolla Gialla pair excellently with various fish dishes, whether fried, grilled, or even raw like sushi and sashimi. Mussels, oysters, crabs, and other seafood find a harmonious complement in its lively acidity and mineral notes. Poultry dishes, whether chicken, turkey, or duck, can also harmonize well with Ribolla Gialla, especially when prepared with light sauces or herbs. In general, Ribolla Gialla pairs excellently with light and fresh dishes that highlight its lively acidity and fruity aromas.

Grape variety

RIBOLLA GIALLA

The Ribolla Gialla, a white grape variety, thrives primarily in Northern Italy and Slovenia, with a longstanding presence in Friuli. Its history traces back to the Roman era, possibly introduced and cultivated by vintners during that time. Throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, viticulture in Friuli experienced an initial peak, with Ribolla Gialla already among the leading varieties. In the 20th century, Friuli's winemakers modernised their vineyards and enhanced their techniques, resulting in higher quality Ribolla Gialla wines. Today, the grape variety represents an essential component of Friuli-Venezia Giulia's renowned wine region, producing excellent white wines. Ribolla Gialla vines are known for their robustness and vigorous growth. The leaves are of medium size, round to slightly oval, with a leathery texture. Their colour varies depending on ripeness and prevailing climatic conditions. The grapes are medium sized with a dense, conical structure. The berries appear in a yellowish hue, developing a distinctive taste that brings forth characteristic wine aromas. Ribolla Gialla ripens from medium to late stages, thriving in calcareous soils and warm, sunny days with cool nights during maturation, making Friuli its ideal habitat. While not as widespread as other varieties, Ribolla Gialla is gaining popularity among wine enthusiasts and winemakers alike. Its uniqueness and versatility in winemaking make it a fascinating choice for producers and connoisseurs alike.
